Support During the Teenage Years

Adolescence is a period of development marked by significant physical, cognitive, and socio-emotional changes. During this period, they are forming an identity separate from their parents including their own values, beliefs, and goals. They are exploring different roles and interests as they try to understand who they are and who they want to become. They are seeking autonomy from parents and focusing more on relationships with their peers. They are in the process of transitioning into adulthood. It can be an exciting and rewarding time for you and your teen.

At the same time, it can be a challenging and confusing transitional stage for teens. Their pursuit of autonomy can lead to frequent conflicts between them and their parents, as well as other authority figures. As they strive to understand themselves and their place in the world, their exploration, experimentation, and risk-taking behaviors do not always lead to positive outcomes. For example, they may be engaging in substance use, reckless driving, and risky sexual behaviors that lead to negative consequences at home, in school, or with law enforcement. Their emotional development during this period can come with emotional intensity where they can experience mood swings and increased sensitivity; making them more susceptible to mental health challenges. You and your teen may be trying hard to navigate through this unpredictable period, but you are recognizing that assistance may be needed. That is where I can help.
